The Ajinomoto Post Graduate Grant provides an opportunity to students from five ASEAN countries (Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam) to receive a full scholarship in one of the graduate schools in the field of science and technology at the University of Tokyo. The scholarship recipient can either enroll as a research student first then as a master’s course student (3-year program) or directly as a master’s course student (2-year program).
Benefits
- ¥150,000 monthly allowance for a maximum of 1 year as a research student at a graduate school
- ¥180,000 monthly allowance for a maximum of 2 years as a master’s course student at a graduate school
- Full coverage of examination, admission and tuition fees
- Full coverage of Japanese language training prior to going to Japan
- Full coverage of airfare to and from Japan
Duration
- If the recipient enrolls as a research student, scholarship will be provided for a maximum of 3 years (1 year as a research student and maximum of 2 years as a master’s course student). The scholarship will be suspended if the recipient fails to pass the entrance exam for a master’s course within a year after arriving to Japan.
- If the recipient enrolls as a master’s course student, scholarship will be provided for a maximum of 2 years.
Recipients
One (1) student from each of five (5) ASEAN countries (Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam)
Graduate schools
Applicant can enroll either as a research student first or directly as a master’s course student in one of the courses, except medicine and veterinary medicine, of the graduate schools of the University of Tokyo.
- Applicant may enroll either as a research student or directly as a master’s course student for Graduate School of Engineering, Information Science and Technology, Frontier Science, and Science.
- Applicant may only enroll as a research student for Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Science and Agricultural and Life Science.
- Applicant may only enroll directly as a master’s course student for Graduate School of Mathematical Science and ITASIA* of Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies.
* ITASIA is a program in English language and may enroll in October only. - Graduate School of Science, Engineering, Agricultural and Life Science and Frontier Science have special program in English. Confirm the details for applying in the University of Tokyo website.

About Ajinomoto Scholarship Foundation
The Ajinomoto Scholarship Foundation was founded on June 1957 in Tokyo, Japan with the primary intention of contributing to the development of scientific research through the cultivation of scientists. Since then, the foundation has provided scholarship loans and grants to undergraduate and graduate students. In April 1991, the Ajinomoto Scholarship Foundation also started to provide loans and grants to research and postdoctoral students.
In 2009, in celebration of the 100th year anniversary of the Ajinomoto Group, the Foundation started to extend its scholarship program to five ASEAN countries (Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam).
About the Ajinomoto Scholarship for ASEAN International Students
The Ajinomoto Scholarship for ASEAN International Students aims to cultivate individuals who would lead and contribute to the development of Asia, and to create a mutual understanding between these ASEAN countries and Japan. This scholarship program provides an opportunity to aspiring individuals to enroll in a master’s degree in the field of science and technology at the University of Tokyo.
As we also aim to contribute to the economic, cultural and educational development of the society, the Ajinomoto Group hopes that these selected individuals will lead and contribute to the development of their respective society upon completion of their master’s course at the University of Tokyo.Eligibility
- Applicant must be a Filipino citizen.
- Applicant must be under the age of 35 on April 1, 2011.
- Applicant must have graduated or be expected to graduate by April 2010 with at least 15 years of education completed or expected to be completed.
- Applicant must have an excellent academic record.
- Applicant must not be receiving other scholarships.
- Applicant (either as a post graduate international research student or a master’s course student) must be able to obtain the approval of acceptance and be a registered student at the University of Tokyo for April 2011 or October 2011 (depending on the chosen course).
- Applicant may choose to enroll directly as master’s course student in some graduate schools provided applicant has obtained approval of acceptance and has registered at the University.
- Applicant must have adequate Japanese language proficiency when pursuing master’s course, ideally Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) Level 1 or its equivalent.
- If enrolling as a master’s course student, applicant must be able to pass at least Level 3 of Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) in a test administered no later than December 2010.
- If enrolling as a research student, applicant must be able to pass at least Level 3 of Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) in a test administered no later than December 2011.
- Applicant must apply from the Philippines and be able to attend selection procedures when necessary.
- Applicant must have a strong sense of nationalism, leadership and motivation.
- Applicant must be in good physical and mental health.

- Recommendation Form (113KB) by university president or academic advisor

- 3 passport photos, taken within the last 6 months
- Certified true copy of transcript of records
- Certified true copy of university/college diploma

The Ajinomoto Scholarship Foundation will suspend or terminate the scholarship immediately or may claim the partial or full refund of the scholarship amount, if any one of the following conditions applies to the scholarship recipient:
- Has false information on the application form
- Receives any other scholarship
- Fails to pass at least JLPT Level 3 in a test administered no later than December 2010 (for recipient who enrolls as a master’s course student)
- Fails to pass at least JLPT Level 3 in a test administered no later than December 2011 (for recipient who enrolls as a research student)
- Fails to pass the entrance examination to a University of Tokyo master’s course within one year after arriving to Japan (for recipient who enrolls as a research student)
- Fails to arrive in Japan by the appointed date
- Shows poor academic performance due to absence, lack of desire to study or inability to keep up research for some reason
- Has difficulty to continue due to illness or other health problems
- Violates the rules and regulations of the University of Tokyo or the Ajinomoto Scholarship Foundation
