Beasiswa PhD dari Universitas Leicester

KOMPAS.com - Fakultas Kriminologi Universitas Leicester (University of Liecester, Inggris, menawarkan kesempatan dua jenis beasiswa gelar master/PhD pada bidang studi kriminologi. Program ini akan dimulai Oktober 2010 mendatang.

Beasiswa pertama adalah beasiswa penuh waktu dengan skema meliputi gaji dan biaya kuliah selama tiga tahun, yang besarnya setara mata uang Inggris atau Uni Eropa. Besaran gaji diberikan setara dengan yang diperoleh untuk bekerja di dewan riset, yang pada 2009 lalu senilai £13,290.

Namun, untuk kandidat dari luar Inggris kemungkinan akan dipertimbangkan berdasarkan syarat-syarat tertentu. Adapun beasiswa kedua adalah beasiswa paruh waktu, yang hanya menyediakan biaya kuliah selama lima tahun.

Untuk kedua beasiswa ini, pihak fakultas hanya akan memberikan kesempatan mengirimkan proposal tentang bidang-bidang studi dalam area kriminologi, yang idealnya tertarik pada satu atau dua bidang riset khusus. Beberapa bidang riset itu antara lain mengenai target kekerasan, kepolisian, geng dan kenakalan/kejahatan remaja, kekerasan dalam sepakbola, kriminal dan media, kriminal dan film, kejahatan terorisme dan keamanan, penjara dan pendidikan, dan banyak lagi.

Research Studentships in Criminology

The Department of Criminology invites applications from prospective PhD students for two studentships in Criminology commencing October 2010:

  • 1 x full-time studentship - covers tuition fees at the UK/EU rate over three years and includes a stipend

  • 1 x part-time studentship - covers tuition fees at the UK/EU rate over five years

The successful applicants will join a lively and stimulating department and will be supervised by leading experts in their field.

Research Areas

The Department would welcome proposals in any area of Criminology but ideally falling within one or more of the staff specialist research interests. These can be found on the staff and research pages and include:

  • hate crime and targeted violence
  • gangs and youth crime
  • football violence
  • policing
  • crime and the media
  • crime film
  • global policing, security and terrorism
  • penal policy
  • sentencing
  • prison arts and education
  • the arts in the criminal justice system
  • prison architecture
  • retail crime and loss prevention
  • forensic mental health and secure mental health provision
  • developmental life-course criminology

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have completed recognised ESRC research training at Masters level or have equivalent research training experience, as well as an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.

Applications from both UK/EU students and from international students (outside the EU) are welcomed for the full-time studentship. However, please note that the award covers the UK/EU tuition fee rate only; international students will need to pay the difference between this and the international tuition fee rate. The stipend is equivalent to that provided by the research councils, currently £13,290 for 2009/10, but will be updated for 2010/11. International applicants may be considered on a 'reduced-stipend plus fee waiver' package.

The part-time studentship is open to UK/EU applicants only.

Applications should include a concise research proposal (three or four sides of A4 paper) covering:

  • the main aims of the research
  • a summary of the research and its original contribution to criminology
  • the relationship of the proposed work to existing literature and research
  • the analytical framework and methodological approach
  • the proposed research timetable
